Overexpressing caveolins
What happens to a cell expressing high levels of caveolin?
Caveolin is a key protein in the formation of caveolae, which are small invaginations in the plasma membrane involved in endocytosis. High levels of caveolin promote the formation of caveolae, leading to increased receptor internalization through caveola-mediated endocytosis. This process is important for receptor recycling, signal transduction, and maintaining membrane dynamics. In contrast, degradation of ubiquitinated proteins primarily occurs via the proteasome or lysosome, not through caveolae. Caveolin also does not directly promote exocytosis; rather, it is involved in endocytosis and membrane trafficking. It is not directly involved in regulating autophagy receptors and protein synthesis, which occurs in the ribosomes and is regulated by different cellular signals.
